Title: Bulymada (Black Snapper)

Size: 35cm x 46cm

Meduim: Acrylic on canvas

Artist: Lauren Greatorex

This artwork, Bulymada (Black Snapper), reflects the deep connection between sea Country and cultural identity. The Black Snapper, a valued saltwater species, is depicted with intricate linework that symbolises its importance as both a food source and a spiritual presence within coastal life.

The surrounding patterns echo the movement of tides, currents, and reef systems, illustrating the interconnectedness of marine life and the rhythms of the ocean. The layered blue tones capture the shifting waters of Gathaagudu (Shark Bay), where seagrass meadows and tidal flows sustain and nurture life.

Through this piece, I honour the stories of saltwater people, acknowledging the knowledge passed down through generations that teaches respect for the sea and its abundance. Bulymada stands as a reminder of the balance between people, Country, and the ocean that sustains us.
